Later this week I'll be going down to the Lower Lakes with Bob Brown and Senator Sarah Hanson-Young. Many people have said we need a Franklin-style campaign to save the Murray. Yes, we do need that level of commitment, but when the death of the Lower Lakes is by a thousand cuts (make that: water licences), we need to focus our attention on those with the power and resources to secure environmental flows. The biggest blocakage isn't the proposed Wellington Weir, it's in the minds and hearts of our political leaders who can't or won't see the urgency of the situation and refuse to use available powers and funds to secure urgent water. Penny Wong & Kevin Rudd may have given up, but the Greens haven't.
